Prof. Mark Howard
presenting on 'Unilateral diaphragm dysfunction symptom burden and physiological impact'
BMark is Director of the Victorian Respiratory Support Service, Professor and Academic Lead for The University of Melbourne Department of Medicine at Austin Health and board member for the Institute for Breathing and Sleep. He has over 200 peer reviewed journal publications, with current trials including evaluation of home respiratory monitoring for sleep apnoea and respiratory failure, polysomnography for ventilation optimisation and remote ventilator titration.
Dr. Daniel Hynes
presenting on 'Unilateral diaphragm dysfunction: a local perspective on assessment and treatment'
Daniel is a Respiratory and Sleep Physician with a strong interest in chronic ventilatory failure and diaphragm dysfunction. After completing a clinical fellowship with the Victorian Respiratory Support Service, he remains on as a VRSS staff specialist at both the Austin and Monash Health. He is involved in both clinical and research aspects of the diaphragm plication pathway at the Austin.

presenting on 'Peri operative outcomes of diaphragmatic plication on the cPHRENIC-A protocol (Comprehensive Physiological assessment, Hemidiaphragm Radiological Examination, Neurophysiological Investigation and Clinical Assessment protocol)'
Dr Stephen A. Barnett MBBS, FRACS (General), FRACS (Cardiothoracic) Dr Stephen Barnett is a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at the Austin Hospital, and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at the University of Melbourne. After fellowship training in the US at both Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in NYC and The Brigham and Women's and Harvard Medical School in Boston, he returned to Melbourne in 2010 to establish Australia's first public hospital robotic thoracic surgery program at PMCC, which has since expanded to complex robotic-assisted procedures including diaphragmatic plication. His research includes rigorous physiological assessment of patients being considered for thoracic surgery. At the Austin Hospital he is Surgical Lead for the cPHRENIC-A protocol — a comprehensive physiological, radiological and neurophysiological assessment of hemidiaphragm function to select patients who will benefit from plication and to understand better the aetiology of symptoms in this cohort — and Principal Investigator of RAPTOR, a study of physiologic testing to predict outcomes after lung resection. He brings these two threads together, discussing the outcomes of robotic diaphragmatic plication through the lens of careful preoperative physiological assessment.
